Loading .223 with WC-844 & Hornady 55 GR V-Max #22716

06/09/19 – Below are my results:

Rifle: AR-15 with a 16” FN barrel, 1/7 twist and a YHM Phantom QD suppressor.
Powder: WC-844
Bullets: Hornady 55 gr V-Max (P/N 22716)
Primers: WSR
COL & Crimp: 2.250” with light taper crimp
Cases: Mixed LC brass trimmed to 1.750”
Conditions: 75 deg F, cloudy, humid

Load Data*
Hodgdon (Sim H335, using SPR SP): Start 23.0 gr (3018 fps) and Max 25.3 gr (3203 fps) – 24″, 1/12, WSR

Here were my results, 5 shots each at 50 yds:
24.1 gr – Avg 2772, ES 75, SD 30, 0.725”
24.4 gr – Avg 2782, ES 81, SD 36, 1.000”
24.7 gr – Avg 2861, ES 128, SD 46, 1.370”
25.0 gr – Avg 2913, ES 127, SD 49, 0.750”
25.3 gr – Avg 2932, ES 45, SD 19, 1.320”
25.5 gr – Avg 2954, ES 85, SD 39, 1.350”

A few observations:

  • My best load (IMO) was 25.0 gr which produced a five shot group of 3/4” at 50 yds with an average speed of 2913.
  • Ball powder meters very well. And burns clean, even shooting suppressed.
