Loading .223 with TAC & Hornady 55 GR V-Max #22716

06/08/19 – Below are my results:

Rifle: AR-15 with a 16” FN barrel, 1/7 twist and a YHM Phantom QD suppressor.
Powder: Ramshot TAC
Bullets: Hornady 55 gr V-Max (P/N 22716)
Primers: WSR
COL & Crimp: 2.250” with light taper crimp
Cases: Mixed LC brass trimmed to 1.750”
Conditions: 84 deg F, partly cloudy, humid

Load Data*
Ramshot: Start 22.2 gr (2909 fps) and Max 24.7 gr (3179 fps) – 24″, 1/12, WSR
Hornady (9th Ed.): Start 21.5 gr (2800 fps) – Max 24.7 gr (3200 fps) – 26”, 1/12, WSR

Here were my results, 5 shots each at 50 yds:
23.2 gr – Avg 2673, ES 69, SD 28, 0.525”
23.5 gr – Avg 2717, ES 111, SD 39, 1.080”
23.8 gr – Avg 2775, ES 86, SD 33, 0.870”
24.1 gr – Avg 2781, ES 81, SD 32, 0.850”
24.4 gr – Avg 2874, ES 94, SD 45, 1.185”
24.7 gr – Avg 2914, ES 57, SD 29, 0.760”
25.0 gr – Avg 2939, ES 65, SD 28, 0.730”
25.0 gr – Avg 2930, ES 96, SD 35, 0.860”

A few observations:

  • My best load (IMO) was 25.0 gr which produced a five shot group of 3/4” at 50 yds with an average speed of 2935. I think I will load it at 24.9 in the future.
  • Ball powder meters very well. And burns clean, even shooting suppressed.
